PARLIAMENTARY BY-ELECTIONS 1967
The final batch of walkouts from Parliament involved Barisan lawmakers Loh Miaw Gong, who was under detention, as well as Koo Young, Ong Lian Teng, Poh Ber Liak and Tan Cheng Tong, all who resigned on 5 December 1966. This left Barisan with only two seats occupied by Chan Sun Wing (Nee Soon) and Wong Soon Fong (Toa Payoh). Both were once PAP's trusted wingmen, heading People's Association and Works Brigade respectively until they were revealed in 1962 to be at the forefront of pro-communist infiltration into these organisations. They fled Singapore to evade detention but the seats were not vacated despite their prolonged absence. As opposition parties maintained their boycott, only one constituency saw a contest, with the PAP candidate facing two independents. This handed the ruling party another decisive victory, leaving only its ranks among active Members of Parliament.
