CITY COUNCIL ELECTION 1952
City Councillors whose term expired were those successfully elected in the second Municipal Election of 1949, including two PP women politicians Phyllis Eu and Amy Laycock, both whom were running for a second term. Not long after the last Municipal Election, PP expelled one of its Councillors, S. S. Manyam (North). His wife would be standing as an independent candidate in the West ward. LP was facing internal turmoil, which led to multi-corner contests of members running as independents. Earlier in the year, LP expelled its Councillor, M. P. D. Nair (South), who won unopposed in a by-election for a Legislative Assembly seat around the same time. Another outgoing LP Councillor, S. M. A. H. Chisty, resigned from his party and would re-contest as an independent. They were part of a LP rebel faction headed by S. Jaganathan, who was protesting against an earlier expulsion of former LP chairman Lim Yew Hock, who would later become Chief Minister of Singapore. Jaganathan was contesting as an independent against Lim's nemesis P. M. Williams. For the first time, municipal elections were also concurrently held in the six Peninsular towns of Batu Pahat, Johore Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Muar and Penang, where the UMNO-MCA-Muslim League alliance in Malaya swept 26 out of 36 seats.
