A major split within PAP, with the dissidents led by Lim Chin Siong and Lee Siew Choh, precipated its formation on 29 July 1961. Drawing away more than half of PAP's resources, it was the strongest opponent that ever PAP faced. For the 1963 General Election, it worked with PR as one unit. From 1966, its representatives in the legislature resigned their seats and the party boycotted elections over what it proclaimed was Singapore's "phoney" independence. Attempting to make a comeback in 1972, it could no longer win any seat in subsequent elections. In 1988, with its strength dwindled, its members merged with WP to strengthen the opposition and applied for dissolution. The application was denied approval as Barisan's constitution required all its branches to agree to the dissolution but none were left. Hence, it was left dormant. The party used to run a publication called "The Plebian" when it as active. |
