Formed before the 1955 General Election by several wealthy businessmen, many whom were Chinese Chamber of Commerce leaders, it was headed by Tan Eng Joo, nephew of renowned tycoon Tan Lark Sye. One of the two largest parties along with PP before the rise of LF and PAP, DP merged with PP to form a very well-resourced LSP after merely a year in existence. However, the electoral prospects of the combined force remained dim. Tan did not contest subsequent elections.
