Also referred to as "Singapore Justice Party" or SJP, it was formed by shipyard workers to represent the Indian community although this purpose was eventually phased out. From the onset, it was hampered by infighting and remained sluggish. When erstwhile SDP Member of Parliament Chiam See Tong joined SPP in 1997, JPS chairman Desmond Lim and some members crossed over to SPP with the endorsement of those who stayed on. In 2001, JPS was an inaugural component of SDA along with SPP, NSP and PKMS. After SPP pulled out of SDA in 2011, Lim fell out with Chiam and, in order to stay within SDA, left SPP to return to JPS and became its secretary-general.
