The Mountbatten branch of LSP broke away to form KURA after the expulsion of its branch chairman and prominent woman politician Mrs Felice Leon-Soh from LSP. On 28 June 1959, a month after the General Election that year, it was depoliticised and renamed Singapore United Asiatic Residents' Association, while its key members formed SC as their electoral vehicle. SUARA operated for another year before dissolving itself.
