The earliest registered political party in the official records, it began as the Singapore branch of MCA, which was founded on 27 February 1949 by Malayan members of the China-based Kuomintang. On 2 October 1967, it was renamed SCP after a new law came into effect in December 1966 to forbid local parties from being affiliated to their foreign counterparts. However, it did not cite this as a reason for its name change. It then took MCA Malaysia's old youth wing symbol as its new symbol. Thereafter, its members contested elections only under UNF and UPF. Today, its hinterland party in the Peninsular is known as Malaysian Chinese Association, which upgraded its symbol to a 14-point star in accordance with the Malaysia flag.
