Attempts to register the party by a group of professionals began in 1967 but this was delayed due to disputes with Singapore's Registry of Societies over constitutional matters. By the time of its approval, most of its key founders and backers had either joined and revived WP, among them J. B. Jeyaretnam, or helped form PF.
