Set up by opposition veterans who were mostly from SDP and SUF, it has gained infamy in recent times for a spate of secretary-general departures, with one leaving the post every three years since its founding. Before the 2001 General Election, NSP co-founded SDA with SPP, SJP and PKMS. In that GE, it clinched its first and only seat when Steve Chia became a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament. Less than a year after the 2006 GE, where it failed to win any seat, it left SDA to revert to its own banner. In 2008, it explored merger with SPP without a conclusive outcome. In the 2011 GE, it fielded the most candidates after absorbing a group of former RP members but by the 2015 GE, many had left. NSP issues a publication that began as "The Solidarity" before being renamed "NSP News" and later "North Star". |
