Considered as the oldest active opposition party today, it began as the Singapore extension of Malaya's UMNO, linchpin of Alliance Party Malaya that was established on 11 May 1946. Similar to its counterpart, Singapore UMNO allied with the local branches of MCA and MIC. On 19 March 1967, it was renamed PKMS after a new legislation was passed in December 1966 forbidding local parties from being affiliated to foreign ones. The new name was approved by the government on 3 May 1967. Presently a component party of SDA along with JPS, PKMS continues to maintain ties with UMNO, which led the Barisan Nasional (National Front) government in Malaysia until 2018. In 2016, PKMS unveiled its first newsletter "Warta", which translates as "News" in the Malay language. |
