The first political party to appear in Singapore elections, it advocated for a gradual but eventual self-government and was dominant in its early days. PP's leadership mainly comprised of English-speaking renowned legal fraternity bigwigs like C. C. Tan and John Laycock and its symbol was launched on 2 April 1955 after laws were amended to permit the use of a common symbol during elections. In the General Election that year, it performed badly to the chagrin of its leaders. On 5 February 1956, it merged with the relatively new DP to form LSP and was dissolved. |
