Began as the Singapore branch of Partai Ra'ayat Malaya, a Peninsular party founded on 11 November 1955. In the same year PR was formed, another offshoot emerged in Brunei but was outlawed after five years by the Brunei sultan. On 18 April 1961, PR cordially seceded from PRM and days later, it supported PAP during the Hong Lim by-election. At the 1963 General Election, PR joined forces with the main opposition Barisan but failed to clinch seats like its ally, although its votes improved significantly due to the collaboration. On 3 March 1967, it announced it would defy an order, based on a new law for societies passed in December 1966, to rename and distinguish itself from its one-time Malaysian counterpart but was not de-registered. In 1968, PR supported the elections boycott led by Barisan and maintained its position in 1972 despite the return of Barisan to the polls. Shortly after, it became defunct. Meanwhile, PRM continues to be present in Malaysia politics, albeit as a small player. |
