Launched on 16 January 2019, it is the third political party after Barisan and UPP, and the first in post-independent Singapore, to be established by a previous PAP lawmaker, namely Tan Cheng Bock. A presidential candidate in 2011, Tan is one of the only two former PAP Members of Parliament to have ventured into opposition politics. Due to his stature, PSP grew faster than the average new opposition party and also received the endorsement of Lee Hsien Yang, younger son of the late Lee Kuan Yew and brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, whom he had fallen out with. In its debut, it did not win any seat but a close margin in a GRC earned it two Non-Constituency MP seats.
